Kurt Kinetic Trainers: Classic, Smart and Smart Control

Follow

Which Kurt Kinetic Trainer do you have?

Kurt Kinetic makes different levels or versions of the same trainer.  Knowing which one you have will determine how and if it interacts with The Sufferfest app.  There are 3 basic models:  The Road Machine, the Rock'n'Roll and the R1 Direct Drive.  The Road Machine and the Rock'n'Roll come with different levels of interaction:  Classic (no control, no data), Smart (data, no control) and Control/Smart Control (data and trainer control)

Classic Trainers

The Kurt Kinetic Classic trainers have no motor or power unit attached.  They can be used with the Sufferfest app using Virtual Watts.

Kurt Kinetic "Smart" Compatibility

The Road Machine and the Rock'n'Roll are available in models that are termed "smart".  The data is calculated and transmitted using InRide sensor technology.  There are two different types of inRide sensors that Kurt Kinetic makes.  Please see below to find out if your inRide sensor will work with The SUF.

1st & 2nd Generation - Not Compatible With The Sufferfest Training System

Notice that the inRide sensor (the little box at the end of the arrow) is black in color.  These transmit their data in a manner that The Sufferfest Training System is not able to decipher.

3rd Generation  - Compatible With The Sufferfest Training System

inRide_-_Green.png

Notice that the inRide sensor (the little box at the end of the arrow) is green in color.  These transmit their data in a manner that The Sufferfest Training System can use for power and cadence data.  If you have a compatible sensor, you will connect to the app directly:  Device Connections

Not Compatible?  There Is Still A Way... Virtual Watts!

It is never good news to find out that your sensor won't work with our app but there is another way.  Don't worry though, if you have a speed sensor on your bike we can use that along with your Kurt Kinetic trainer to connect to The Sufferfest app using Virtual Watts.

Follow this link to learn about setting up Virtual Watts in The Sufferfest app.

Note: Virtual Watts will give you nearly the same data that the inRide sensor would.  The Sufferfest app is just calculating your power numbers rather than the calculations happening inside of the inRide sensor itself.

Kurt Kinetic Smart Control Trainers

Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and Rock'n'Roll trainers are also available with a smart control unit that allows the app to control the trainer.  The R1 direct drive trainer is also a smart control trainer.  For compatibility with the app, please check the following chart for your trainer model number:
