Power delay on The Cure

I suffered The Cure for the first time today. I noticed in several instances that when the power target increased for an interval, the resistance of my trainer (CycleOps Hammer) didn't increase at the same time but was delayed for about 4-5 seconds. It didn't happen at every power target increase but across all three sets of intervals it happened maybe 30%-40% of the time.

Frustrating because I wasn't able to suffer as much as I wanted to.

  • I'm getting the same thing on The Cure.  Wahoo Kickr + Ant + Erg mode.  Had same issue with Bluetooth on previous session.  Other workouts seem fine.  Power target shows on screen correctly but delay of circa 5 seconds on just some intervals before resistance actually changes.

  • It's the short intervals that do that and it happens even on high end trainers. I have a Tacx Neo and use it on ERG for short interval workouts like The Cure, Half is Easy. Doing this is not recommended by Sufferfest because of lag problems exactly as you have described, but I find it ok.

Your experiences are much like mine. I often get a 5-6 second lag, which can be a problem when I'm really on the limit as it works both ways. Sometimes it's 6 seconds slow to kick in, but other times it kicks in at the right time but stays on for an extra 6 seconds.

You'll get this whether communicating via bluetooth or ANT+ I believe. I'm always on ANT+ and I get it.

It balances out. Sometimes it makes a session too hard, and sometimes a little easier.

  • I'm experiencing the same thing, also on several different video's. I think that the delays happen at the same spots as well whenever you redo the same workout. Sometimes it lags about 6 seconds when the effort needs to go up, other times a peak sprint will last 6 seconds longer. I like it when you have to suffer longer unexpectedly, but don't like it when a small sprint almost disappears because it kicks in 6 seconds too late.

    I'm using a Neo 2 with a Tacx ANT+ dongle, I don't think this is a connection issue.

  • For me the answer was to switch to using Bluetooth connection from an iPad rather than ANT+ from Windows: I get perfect response from The Cure with this setup.  I continue to use Ant+ from Windows for all the other videos because I had no issues with these and my laptop has a bigger screen than my iPad.  I'd describe this as more of a workaround than a fix.  Interestingly I understand that the update frequency from Sufferfest to the bike hardware (Kickr in my case) is 5 seconds which is exactly the lag time I was experiencing.  Why it should only effect The Cure for me remains a mystery.

  • Has there been any solution to this problem? I've only done 2 rides on my brand new Neo 2T in Sufferfest desktop, the initial setup video and then The Chores. I didn't notice anything during the initial video, but the Chores has a bunch of 40/20 interval sets, and I was consistently seeing a 4-6 second offset where the trainer was "behind" what the screen was showing in terms of power/resistance. Given the short intervals, it's pretty darn significant to be so offset.

I did a very brief lap in the Tacx training app the night before, and from what I saw the response to grades etc was instantaneous. So it's not the trainer that's the problem, that's for sure. I will say though that the Tacx desktop app is awful in terms of stability and connectivity. I couldn't get it to pick up my Fenix 5's HR broadcast, nor a HR Swim. Sometimes I could connect with BT, sometimes not. And it crashed repeatedly when I clicked on the "device" tab. At least 4-5 times in very brief use, although there were no error/crash messages. It was more like it just decided to close itself.

The only caveat to the Sufferfest delay/offset is that I had the trainer in ANT mode. I'll try it again in BT tomorrow and see if that improves it. I find it strange that even if the app and trainer communicate only every 5 seconds, why can't the app say "hey dude, 3 seconds after you get this update ramp up/down so we're in sync, k?"

  • From your experience, I guess not.  I still get perfect response when using my iPAD+Bluetooth so I just use that.  I can only replicate the problem with Windows and ANT+.  I cannot test iPAD+ANT+ unfortunately.

  • I had the same experience doing The Shovel using a Neo 2T, ANT+, and a MacBook Pro.  Really noticeable on the short sprints.  It felt like the Neo was stuck at high power for a while.  Is it true that the videos only talk to the trainer every 5 seconds?  Seems like a long time given the short sprints.  Just makes it hard to time the efforts when it doesn’t correspond to the video prompts.

  • It took me a couple more days to re-do The Chores, as I was having some Bluetooth driver issues. I got that fixed up yesterday, and the power changes were pretty much instantaneous. So looks like, at least in my case, it's an issue with ANT and the Windows desktop app.

  • I experienced that in quite a few videos. ANT+ and Win10. Kickr18.
You can see it even in the power summary graphs after the workout.
While other intervals are spot on, some come/go with delay.
So I guess it’s something that can be fixed?

  • Although I've always been able to cope with it I also would be happy to see it fixed. It's nearly caused me to fail in sessions like Half is Easy, The Chores, etc. It's the ones with high wattage efforts and short recovery times where it can be a real threat. You need those extra few seconds of recovery !!!

  • Marcel,

I'm interested to hear that it's not happening to you on bluetooth. Maybe I'll test that myself. I'm always on ANT+.

  • For me (as per previous comments) I get perfect response with Bluetooth on iPAD, occasional dropouts with Bluetooth on Win10 and plenty of dropouts with Ant+ and Windows 10 on very-short interval workouts.  Be fascinated to hear of any experiences with iPAD + Ant+.
